Border Patrol Agent Jose Barraza was killed in a vehicle crash on I-10, near Fort Hancock, Texas, at approximately 7:30 am.
He was nearing the end of his shift when his patrol truck collided with the rear of a semi near mile marker 78. Agent Barraza was killed at the scene. His canine partner suffered minor injuries.
Agent Barraza had served with the United States Border Patrol for almost eight years and was assigned to the Sierra Blanca Station. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and mother.

A U.S. Border Patrol agent was killed when he crashed into the back of a semi-truck Monday morning on Interstate 10 near Fort Hancock, officials said.

Agent Jose Daniel Barraza, 29, had finished his shift as a dog handler at the Sierra Blanca checkpoint and was driving home to El Paso at about 7:30 a.m. when for unknown reasons he slammed into the rear of a tractor-trailer, Texas Department of Public Safety and Border Patrol officials said.

The driver of the semi-truck, Kethni Jyles, 48, of Hattiesburg, Miss., was not injured in the collision in Hudspeth County, DPS said in a news release.

A Border Patrol dog named Vino who was riding with Barraza in an agency Ford F-150 was not injured, said Bill Brooks, spokesman for the Border Patrol’s Big Bend Sector, which includes the I-10 checkpoint near Sierra Blanca.

Law enforcement dogs often live with their handlers.

Texas DPS Sgt. Elizabeth Carter said that the truck had a cage for the dog.

The accident was under investigation and cause was unknown, Carter said. Weather conditions were clear and dry. Both Barraza and Jyles were wearing safety belts.

Channel 14-KFOX video of the crash scene showed a truck with its front half crushed as if it had gone underneath the back of the trailer.

A photo from a bystander at the scene after the crash showed Border Patrol agents and emergency crews kneeling in prayer.

Brooks said that he did not have information on how long Barraza’s shift had been prior to the accident. He said that agents typically work eight-hour shifts.

Barraza had been with the Border Patrol since 2008, Brooks said.

"Joey was an outstanding person who did everything with a smile and was very passionate about his job but above all extremely passionate about his family," the National Border Patrol Council Big Bend Local 2509 posted on its Facebook page.

Barraza leaves behind a wife and two young sons, the local union stated.
