A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper died Saturday night when he lost control of his patrol car, officials said.
Trooper Jeffrey Nichols, 27, was driving westbound on FM38 near County Road 35450 in Lamar County when he crashed into a tree about 11 p.m. He died at the scene, Sgt. Lonny Haschel said.
Passing motorists reported the crash to authorities.
Nichols is the 218th DPS officer to die in the line of duty since 1837. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
Nichols joined DPS in August 2011 and was stationed in Paris. He is survived by his parents and loving family, Haschel said. Funeral arrangements are pending.
“DPS and the state of Texas have lost one of our finest in the line of duty,” DPS Director Steven McCraw said in a prepared statement. “Every day Trooper Nichols honored his pledge to proudly protect the people of Texas, and his service and sacrifice will always be cherished and remembered.
