Deputy Sheriff Travis Russell was killed in a vehicle crash on Stonewall Avenue, near Prospect Street in Trinidad, while on patrol.
His patrol vehicle crossed the center line and struck a parked vehicle at approximately 11:30 am.
TRINIDAD – A sheriff’s deputy died after he was involved in a two-vehicle accident Tuesday morning.
Colorado State Patrol says Las Animas County Deputy Travis Russell, 44, was traveling eastbound on Stonewall Avenue just west of Prospect Street in Trinidad when his vehicle veered across the westbound lanes, striking the front of an unoccupied 1990 Toyota 4-Runner.
His vehicle continued eastbound, according to CSP, when it rolled onto its passenger side. Russell was on-duty but not responding to a call for service when the crash happened.
CSP says he was wearing his seatbelt.
Russell was taken to Mount San Rafael Hospital, where he died.
An autopsy will determine how he died.
The crash remains under investigation.
