Chief of Police Darrell Allen succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained 10 days earlier while struggling with a subject inside of a club at 301 East Avenue B in Temple, Texas.
Chief Allen and another Marlin Police Department officer were working a secondary employment assignment at the club when Chief Allen attempted to arrest a subject for creating a disturbance at approximately 1:20 am. The man produced a handgun and shot Chief Allen in the face as the two struggled.
The subject was arrested by the other Marlin police officer and a Temple Police Department officer took the man into custody.
Chief Allen was transported to Baylor Scott & White Hospital where he remained until succumbing to the wound on November 10th, 2015.
Chief Allen had served in law enforcement for 21 years. He was survived by his wife and children.

 

TEMPLE — Marlin Police Chief Darrell Allen passed away 9 days after he was shot in the head while working an off-duty security job at a bar in Temple.

The incident occurred on Sunday, November 1, at approximately 1:22 a.m. Chief Darrell Allen was working as uniformed security at the Laid Back Lounge II, located at 201 East Avenue B in Temple.

According to the Temple Police Department, an altercation occurred between Chief Allen and a suspect. Allen was attempting to detain the suspect when he was shot during the struggle.

Allen was transported by ambulance to Baylor Scott and White Hospital for treatment. His injuries are considered life-threatening.

The suspect in the shooting was identified as Derrick Wayne Gamble, 24, of Temple. The Bell County District Attorney’s Office has issued a complaint against Derrick Wayne Gamble for Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer. Gamble is in the Bell County Jail awaiting arraignment.

Chief Allen passed away on November 10. No further details are available at this time.

Allen was in law enforcement since 1994. He acted as Chief in Marlin since 2009.

Temple Police Department Investigators and the Texas Rangers are actively working to gather evidence and interview patrons at the Laid Back Lounge.
