Deputy Sheriff Richard Hall was killed in a vehicle crash on Highway 280, just north of I-16 in Bryan County, at approximately 5:15 pm.
Deputy Hall was attempting to make a U-turn when his Department vehicle was struck by a pickup truck. The driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries.
Deputy Hall had served with the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office for 14 years.

BRYAN CO., GA (WTOC) –

The Chatham County Sheriff’s deputy killed in a motor vehicle accident on Wednesday evening has been identified.

According to the CCSO, Deputy Richard Allen Hall, 45, was killed while on his way home. He was considered on-duty at the time of the accident because he had not officially ended his tour of duty.

According to Bryan County Sheriff Clyde Smith, Hall was traveling west on U.S. Highway 280 just north of Interstate 16 in his patrol car when he attempted to make a u-turn and was struck by a Ford F-150.

The driver of the pickup truck was transported to a local hospital. The Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is investigating the accident.

Hall was assigned to Internal Affairs and was subject to recall 24/7. Some of Hall’s former assignments include the Sex Offender Registration Team and patrol with the Chatham County Police. He was hired in April of 2001.

To his fellow investigators and office staff with Internal Affairs, Hall was more than just a dedicated employee of the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office. He offered moments of levity in a sometimes hectic, stress-filled environment.

And that was an invaluable service and ability that won’t be forgotten by his friends and IA family.

"We all talk trash back here, we all have fun,” said Todd Desautels, CCSO Internal Affairs Investigator. “We all pick on one another. Rick was one of the best. He kept messing with Delatorre, taking the staples out of his stapler. Every time he went to go use it, no staples in it, and it drove him nuts. He thought it was someone else in the office. He accused one other person especially of being the one snatching the staples out of the stapler. All of us that knew about it, which was most of us, we kept our mouths shut. And today, we were sitting down clearing up some in-house business we had to take care of, and broke it to Delatorre that Rick was the one that had been snatching the staples for about the last year out of the stapler. Rick got him till the end, and it was fun."

Visitation will be on Sunday from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at  Fairhaven Funeral Home in Garden City.
