The trooper and Trooper Thyfault were deploying stop sticks when the offender swerved struck both of them with his vehicle.
Trooper Thyfault was killed and the trooper was critically injured.
The driver of the vehicle was apprehended near the scene.
Trooper Thyfault was a U.S. Army veteran and had served with the Colorado State Patrol for several weeks. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Trooper from the rank of Cadet.

BOULDER – Members of law enforcement from around the state honored a Colorado State Patrol cadet hit and killed by a driver allegedly fleeing a traffic stop.

They processed for 21-year-old Taylor Thyfault on Interstate 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. Friday. The Colorado State Patrol warned drivers ahead of time of possible delays as they made their way from Colorado Highway 66 in Longmont, where Thyfault was killed Saturday, to the church in Lafayette for his memorial service.

On one overpass on the route, a huge American flag was hung from the ladders of two fire trucks. Firefighters from Mountain View Fire Rescue and the Frederick Firestone Protection District stood at attention while the procession passed.

During the memorial service, Cadet Thyfault was promoted to Trooper Thyfault due to his heroic actions.

Police say Thyfault was at a separate accident investigation with Trooper Clinton Rushing when Rushing learned of the chase and deployed stop sticks to try to catch 27-year-old Christopher Gebers. Gebers swerved to miss the sticks and hit Rushing and then Thyfault.

Gebers says his accelerator was stuck.

Thyfault’s celebration of life service begins at 10 a.m. at Flatirons Church, located at 355 W. South Boulder Rd. in Lafayette.

The GoFundMe page is setup for both Thyfault and Rushing.

All donations will go directly to the families.
