Sergeant Sean Renfro was struck and killed by a vehicle while directing traffic at an accident scene on Highway 285, at Doubleheader Ranch Road, near Aspen Park at approximately 2:40 pm.
Sergeant Renfro, who was off-duty, had stopped to assist at the scene of a previous crash when his vehicle was also struck as the result of icy and snowy conditions. He remained on scene and was assisting Colorado State Patrol troopers by directing traffic as they worked the accident.
As he directed traffic around the accident scene an SUV lost control, crossed over the center line, and struck Sergeant Renfro, a bystander, and one of the vehicles involved in the second crash. A trooper was also injured by flying debris.
Sergeant Renfro had served with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office for 15 years. He is survived by his wife and four children.

JEFFERSON COUNTY – An off-duty Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office sergeant was killed Saturday afternoon while he was trying to help direct traffic following an accident on US 285 about three miles north of Conifer.

The sergeant, identified by the JCSO as 15-year employee Sean Renfro, is survived by his wife and four children.

Colorado State Patrol says Renfro and another man stopped to offer assistance after a Mitsubishi SUV lost control and ran off the road. It happened at around 2:40 p.m. at Doubleheader Ranch Road — about eight miles west of C-470.

State troopers arrived at the scene after Renfro’s truck was rear-ended by another vehicle while it was parked on the shoulder.

Shortly thereafter, an SUV that was traveling northbound lost control and crossed the highway, hitting Renfro and the person he was with. It also hit the truck, which had the occupants from the initial crash inside, according to CSP.

Renfro died at the scene. The man who was also struck by the SUV and the people involved in the initial crash were taken to nearby hospitals with moderate to serious injuries, according to CSP.

US 285 was closed for five hours after the accident, which happened during a winter storm that left roads throughout the state closed due to icy conditions and blowing snow.

The highway reopened just after 7 p.m. Saturday.

"[Renfro] was well-liked and respected not only by Sheriff’s Office employees but the Jefferson County Community as well," the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office wrote on Facebook.

The crash remains under investigation by the Colorado State Patrol.
