FLAGSTAFF, AZ (CBS5) –

Authorities in Flagstaff say one of their officers has died and another man is dead after a shooting in a residential neighborhood in the city.

Flagstaff police Sgt. Margaret Bentzen said Officer Tyler Jacob Stewart, 24, was taken to Flagstaff Medical Center in critical condition Saturday after being shot in the face.

Stewart’s death was announced by Flagstaff police just before 6 p.m.

Bentzen says officers were searching shortly after 1 p.m. for a male suspect in a domestic violence incident that had occurred earlier in the day.

Bentzen said Stewart is believed to have made contact with the suspect, later identified as Robert Smith, 28, of Prescott, when the shooting happened.

Preliminary information indicated Smith shot at the officer multiple times and then shot himself, according to police.

Bentzen says the investigation is still going on and could not release further details.

Stewart had been with the department less than one year. He graduated from Boulder Creek High School in Anthem and Concordia College in California.

"This is an enormous tragedy for our department and the family of our officer," Police Chief Kevin Treadway said. "We are a very close knit organization, and know that all members of the Flagstaff Police Department are grieving at this time. With that being said, all of the men and women of the Flagstaff Police Department extend our prayers and condolences to the family of our Officer Tyler Stewart."

Mayor Jerry Nabours said, "It is heartbreaking to lose one of our officers. We collectively mourn for his family and the entire department.

CBS 5 News will have updates on this incident as more information becomes available.
