Deputy Sheriff John Street was killed in a single vehicle crash on Highway 57 while responding to an accident at approximately 2:00 am.
His patrol car left the roadway and struck a tree during his response. Other deputies were dispatched to locate him after he failed to respond to radio traffic.
Deputy Street had served as a part-time deputy with the George County Sheriff’s Office for four years and also served as a full time police officer with the Lucedale Police Department. He is survived by his wife and two young children.
A George County deputy and Lucedale police officer was killed early Tuesday morning when responding to an accident in George County.
John Robert Street, 24, was killed just before 2 a.m. Tuesday in a one-vehicle accident on Miss. 57, George County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Shonna Pierce said.
The accident is still under reconstruction, but it appears Street’s vehicle left the road and struck a tree.
Pierce said dispatch tried to reach Street by radio, and when he didn’t answer, officers went out and found the wreck. It appears he was killed instantly.
Street, a four-year veteran of law enforcement. was a full-time officer with the Lucedale Police department and a part-time officer with the George County Sheriff’s Office.
"For 24 years old, he was the most mature young man," said Pierce. "He was always willing to help a fellow officer, he could always be counted on. He was a good person, he was kind and compassionate, he was all the things law enforcement officers are made of."
"He’s leaving a huge gap in our force here," Pierce said.
Officials said arrangements will be released as soon as they’re available.
"We ask for prayers for his family and the officers and staffs of the George County Sheriff’s Office and the Lucedale Police Department," Howell said in a news release.
