Deputy Sheriff Eugene Kostiuchenko was struck and killed by a drunk driver on the Ventura Freeway, near Lewis Road, while conducting a traffic stop.
He was returning to his vehicle at the completion of the stop when the drunk driver struck him and then fled the scene. Two other deputies witnessed the collision and immediately.
The drunk driver fled the scene but crashed his vehicle a short distance away. One of the deputies who witnessed the collision took the man into custody at the scene of the second crash. He was arrested and charged with felony DUI and felony hit and run, with additional charges pending.
Deputy Kostiuchenko had served with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office for 11 years. He is survived by his wife and stepchild.
A Ventura County sheriff’s deputy was killed after another driver crashed into him while the deputy was conducting a traffic stop early Tuesday morning.
The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department identified the deputy as 41-year-old Eugene Kostiuchenko.
Officials say Kostiuchenko had pulled over a driver on a routine traffic stop on the northbound 101 Freeway at Lewis Road at around 1:15 a.m.
After that driver was released, officials said Kostiuchenko was walking back to his patrol vehicle when he was struck by another car. Two back-up deputies witnessed the entire incident from inside their patrol car.
Deputies said the driver sped off heading north on the 101 but eventually crashed near Las Posas Road. That driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Kostiuchenko was an 11-year veteran with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department. He was assigned to patrol Camarillo but also worked assignments in the Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services and in Detention Services during his career.
He leaves behind his wife and two sons.
The suspect was not identified, but officials said he is a 25-year-old male from Camarillo.
The northbound 101 Freeway on-ramp and off-ramp at Lewis Road and the northbound 101 Freeway off-ramp at Las Posas Road were closed for investigation. Daily Drive between Lewis and Arneill roads and Daily Drive at Glen were also shut.
The California Highway Patrol is handling the investigation.
