Sergeant Paul Buckles collapsed while participating in an active shooter training exercise involving multiple agencies in the Canyon area.
He was treated on scene by other officers and EMTs before being transported to a local hospital, where he passed away.
Sergeant Buckles had served with the Potter County Sheriff’s Office for 26 years and was assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division

Potter County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Paul Buckles died Friday during a training exercise in Canyon, according to a post on the sheriff’s office Facebook page. He was 58.

“He was … a good, hardworking man,” Sheriff Brian Thomas said Friday night by phone. “There’s a lot of sadness in our department.”

Thomas said he had worked with Buckles for more than five years and knew that Buckles loved what he did.

“He was a country singer and a songwriter,” Thomas said. “He has been a good and fair, hardworking guy.”

Buckles worked for the sheriff’s office for 26 years, the Facebook post said.
