Sheriff Victor Rose of the Lafayette County Sheriff Department in Arkansas sadly reports that Chief Deputy Sheriff Pete Richardson, 50, was killed about in a patrol vehicle crash.
Deputy Richardson was transporting a homeless man, Michael Lee Ackart, 30, from Tulsa, Oklahoma in Lafayette County to a shelter in Miller County when his patrol unit was involved in a three vehicle crash. One of those vehicles was a semi truck tractor and trailer combination.
For reasons which defy explanation, while Deputy Richardson was driving his patrol vehicle on Highway 82 just west of Lewisville, Ackart suddenly grabbed the steering wheel of the patrol vehicle causing the patrol unit to swerve into oncoming traffic causing the crash.
Deputy Richardson died at the scene of the accident. Ackart and the drivers of the two other vehicles involved were transported to Wadley Regional Medical Center in Texarkana for treatment. Following Ackart’s treatment for his injuries, he was lodged in the Miller County Jail pending arraignment on second degree murder charges.
The crash is being investigated by the Arkansas State Police.
