Deputy Sheriff Percy House was killed in an automobile accident while responding to a call after 9:24 am.
After failing to arrive at the call a massive search was initiated involving multiple agencies from the surrounding counties. Approximately 14 hours later, shortly before midnight, his patrol car was found submerged in a creek off of Massie Branch Road. He was recovered by a police dive team a short time later.
It is believed that his vehicle left the roadway as the result of ice.

GREENSVILLE COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A sheriff’s deputy from the Emporia area who had been missing since Friday morning was found dead in his vehicle.

Greensville County Sheriff’s Deputy Percy Lee House III’s body was found in his patrol car in a creek of Massie Branch Road in Greensville County.

The Virginia State Police is conducting a full investigation, but the accident is reported to be a result of icy road conditions.

Before midnight, a dive team was dispatched to the scene, not far from where the vehicle was last reported driving.

“I want to thank my staff, volunteers from our community, and public safety agencies from the surrounding area for their quick response and support over the last 24 hours,” said Greensville County Sheriff James Edwards. “The loss of Deputy Lee House III to our close department and our community is tragic and unexpected. Please keep his family and all of our first responders in your thoughts and prayers.”

Greensville County first responders searched for House, along with state police, the Emporia Police Department, the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, as well as sheriff’s departments in Brunswick, Northampton, Southampton, and Sussex.

House, 52, had last made contact with the sheriff’s office around 9:24 a.m. Friday. He was last see in the small town of Skippers in Greensville County.
