Agent Carlos Rivera-Vega succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained seven days earlier in an unprovoked attack while conducting an investigation.
He and other members of the Mayagüez Drugs Division had gone to the Concordia Public Housing complex, in Mayagüez, during the course of the investigation. While they were on scene a resident walked up to them and began questioning the officers why they were at the complex. The man suddenly produced a .357 caliber handgun and opened fire, striking Agent Rivera-Vega in the abdomen two times.
The subject ran a short distance away and then committed suicide as other officers pursued him.
Agent Rivera-Vega was transported to Rio Piedras Medical Center where he remained until succumbing to his wounds.
Agent Rivera-Vega had served with the Puerto Rico Police Department for 14 years. He is survived by his wife and two children.


MAYAGÜEZ: Carlos Rivera Vega, the young agent of the Drug Enforcement Division, he was wounded care at the hands of a guy who killed himself moments after committing the acts, died at noon Tuesday at the Industrial Hospital in the capital as a result of projectile impact, causing injuries to the abdomen and vital organs. Late afternoon awaiting the reaction of the high command of the police in the West Area and Superintendent James Tuller Cintron.

The agent extinct, who was 37 years old and a father of 3 children was hit by several explosions this past January 14th in the afternoon, at times he and other members of the Anti-Drug Division, carrying out a pre-round by Residencial Concordia nearby Mayaguez.

Learned that the individual Agostini Alexis Sánchez, approached the car occupied by several agents, including the unfortunate Vega Rivera without saying a word opened fire wounding him in different parts. After committing the assault, the subject that was signed by a number of offenses, including Law 54 and weapons, and ran out of the place immediately, a shot was heard.

The inquiry was referred to the Special Investigations Justice (NIE), in the version that Agostini shot himself in the temple. The scene was found a .357 Magnum revolver, which allegedly carried the individual.

Death Dealer Vega Rivera, who was part of the Police for 14 years, has caused consternation among his colleagues, Criminal Investigation Corps and the community in general. The Superintendent of the Uniformed James Tuller Cintron, today expressed condolences to the families of the fallen in the line of duty and all members of the Police in the region of Mayagüez agent.
