Deputy Sheriff Allen Kay suffered a fatal heart attack following an incident in which he arrested two subjects for illegally possessing a handgun at the Talladega Superspeedway while assigned to a security detail at the venue.
He took the two into custody after holding them at gunpoint, and then transported them to jail. He went to sleep after completing his shift and passed away in his sleep.
Deputy Kay had served with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office for eight years and served as the agency’s nurse in the county jail. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, and four grandchildren,

DEKALB COUNTY, Alabama – An officer who was on the medical staff of the DeKalb County Jail died of natural causes Saturday in his camper at the Talladega Superspeedway, according to Sheriff Jimmy Harris.

Deputy Allen L. Kay, 60, of Henagar, known affectionately as "Nurse Kay," died of an apparent heart attack in his RV, Harris said. No foul play is suspected.

Harris said Kay was working security detail for the race and had worked an overnight shift Friday. Kay worked at the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office for eight years, caring for inmates.

He is survived by his wife, Vicki Kay, a daughter, Amy Graham, and four grandchildren.

"He was a man of integrity, a hard worker, and was well respected," Harris said. "He will be missed by the Sheriff’s Office coworkers, family and friends. May God be with his family and friends during this tragic time."

The funeral for Kay will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rainsville Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Pea Ridge Cemetery.
