A Charlotte County Sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed Monday night while responding to a domestic disturbance call at a Port Charlotte apartment complex.

Cpl. Michael Wilson was fatally shot at the Lakes of Tuscana Apartments on Veterans Boulevard, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.

Wilson, 42, was a 20-year veteran of the department.

A sheriff’s official said Tuesday morning Wilson had a wife and children, although they did not know the children’s ages.

The suspected shooter was found shortly after midnight. Sheriff’s deputies, with assistance from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team, entered an apartment and found the suspect dead inside.

Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Wendy Rose said the agency’s SWAT team "responded with limited personnel and our BearCat armored protection vehicle."

"The tactical robot was deployed to assist with the suspect search," Rose said, adding, "Beyond that, it’s still an active investigation."

It was unclear from initial reports whether the apartment was the same unit to which Wilson had responded, was in the same complex or was located elsewhere.

Wilson was hired by the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office as a corrections deputy in 1992. Two years later he was reassigned to the patrol division.

A former Port Charlotte High School resource officer, Wilson was promoted to corporal in 2003, and served in the school resource division.

My thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Wilson’s wife and children. There are no words to help with their loss, but know that we are thinking and praying for them to receive some consoling peace in their hearts.
