Police Officer William Sprague succumbed to injuries sustained the previous night when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver while investigating a disturbance at Grady T. Wallace Park at approximately 12:30 am.
Officer Sprague had responded to reports of the disturbance, involving approximately 100 people, and was attempting to make contact with the driver of an SUV. The vehicle suddenly accelerated, struck Officer Sprague, and then fled the area. Officer Sprague was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries the following morning.
The subject who struck Officer Sprague was arrested the following day after being interviewed by detectives.
Officer Sprague had served with the Texarkana Police Department for two years and had previously served with several agencies in Arkansas. He is survived by his wife and son.
LITTLE ROCK, AR-It is with great sadness that the Texarkana, Texas Police Department announces that Officer William Jason Sprague has died as a result of injuries sustained after being intentionally struck by an automobile on 6-14-2013.
Officer Sprague passed away while being treated at Christus St. Michael Hospital in Texarkana, Texas.
Officer Sprague had been employed with the Texarkana, Texas Police Department since January of 2012.
Officer Sprague was born in Idabel, Oklahoma in 1982.
Prior to coming to Texarkana, he worked for Grant County Arkansas Sheriff’s Department 1 years and for the Pine Bluff Arkansas Police Department for almost 4 years.
Officer Sprague is survived by his wife, Stephanie, and 4 year old son, Caden, as well as his mother and step-father, Marsa and Mike Green, father, Chipper Sprague, in-laws, Mike and Karen Anderson, two brothers and two sisters.
This is the fourth in the line of duty death for the Texarkana, Texas Police Department.
The list includes: William T. Flint in 1877, J.R. Walraven in 1929, and Norris Cooley in 1988.
