The driver who struck him failed to stop but was arrested a short distance away. The subject was a habitual drunk driver who was out on bond on a previous drunk driving arrest.
Deputy Key had served as a corrections officer with the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office for 3-1/2 years. He had served as a patrol deputy for only two months. He is survived by his wife and three children.
SHERMAN (AP) — A sheriff’s deputy in North Texas has died and authorities have arrested a repeat drunken driver for allegedly hitting him while he was directing traffic.
The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office said a vehicle driven by Ricky Trent Stanley of Whitesboro struck Deputy Chad Christian Key Saturday night while Key was working to direct traffic near U.S. Highway 82, six miles east of Sherman.
Authorities said Stanley fled the scene of the accident and was later arrested.
Key was pronounced dead at an area hospital.
Authorities said Stanley, 28, has two previous convictions for driving while intoxicated in 2002 and 2004, and was out on $10,000 bond after being arrested again in August.
Blood test results on the driver were pending and bond has not been set on new charges that include intoxication manslaughter of a peace officer, failing to stop and render aid, driving with an invalid license, and unlawfully carrying a weapon.
The 42-year-old Key had been a patrol deputy for a little more than two months. He has a wife and three sons ages 20, 10 and two months.
Funeral services for Deputy Key are pending at the Waldo Funeral Home in Sherman. Key’s family will establish a fund for his sons at a local bank on Monday.
