Police Chief Randy Boykin was struck and killed by a vehicle while directing school traffic at the town’s main intersection.
He succumbed to his injuries while being flown University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Chief Boykins had served as chief for 12 years and also served as a part-time deputy with the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office.
A collision on Highway 513 at River Road about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday claimed the life of Enterprise Police Chief Randy Boykin.
Boykin, 51, was directing traffic at that location, as he did daily during school rush hours, when he was struck by a Dodge Charger. The female driver, who had her daughter in her car, stopped immediately and offered assistance, along with others.
Boykin was airlifted to University Medical Center where hospital officials say he died.
"Upon my arrival an off duty officer was here. He and myself tried to regain some kind of control of the situation," said Clarke County Sheriff Todd Kemp. "We had traffic everywhere; you could imagine school traffic in the morning."
Kemp says Boykin did speak to a number of people who were at the scene before being transported to a helicopter.
"I’ve known Randy Boykin pretty much all of my life and he has been a big part of law enforcement community for a long time. He was a good father, great father, great husband to his wife Sandra," said Kemp.
"We all prayed for him and prayed for the family, and prayed for us," said Jeanette Doby. "Like I say, he was such a dear friend to all of us."
"He was a great guy, made sure everyone got to school on time, kept everybody out of trouble," said Zac Morgan. "Just a regular nice guy."
"Did a great job for up here," said Chuck Hamrick. "He was out here every morning. You wouldn’t believe how congested this is in the morning times. He was always out there and doing his job."
"He was a hard worker and he loved his family," said Clarke County Chief Deputy Barry White. "And it’s just a sad day."
Boykin had been chief of police in Enterprise for 12 years and also worked as a part-time deputy.
The Mississippi Highway patrol is investigating the incident.
Meanwhile, Boykin’s fellow law enforcement officers are reaching out to help his family in this difficult time.
The Southern States Police Benevolent Foundation and local officers have established an account in his name at any Regions bank.
One hundred percent of the money donated to this fund will go to Chief Boykin’s family.
A fundraiser is also tentatively planned for Mar. 30,
but the details are still being finalized.
