The man was wanted for sexual battery of a minor and possession of child pornography. After entering the apartment the detectives located the man hiding in a bathtub. As the man resisted arrest the officers attempted to use a taser on him. He opened fire on the officers, striking Investigator Walters in the face and wounding two other officers. One of the wounded officers was able to return fire and killed the subject.
All three officers were transported to University of Mississippi Medical Center, where Investigator Walters succumbed to his wound approximately 40 minutes later.

Officers reported that Gaines was uncooperative and was about to be tased when Gaines drew a weapon and began firing. The officers returned fire.

May God bless Investigator Walters and his family. And continue to bless all our police officers who put themselves in harm’s way every time they put on that uniform – a chosen profession – protecting us and our families.

so sorry,..the death of a Police Officer is ALWAYS a tragedy,..but what I can`t understand is how the suspect got the “drop” on the Officers,..??…a long time ago, I was on M. P. duty in Korea,..U. S. M. C. …we were instructed to ALWAYS approach a suspicious pedestrian/vehicle,..!!..with our weapons in hand AND cocked,..!!..(you can`t tell a South Korean citizen from a North Korean terrorist,..!!..)…I asked the same question here in Florida when Sheriff Deputy Pell was gunned down by the creep and his girlfriend that were stealing articles from a Motel to sell for drug money,..??..I was told that “complacency” plays a big part of an Officers daily life,..??..!!..so sad,..!! I HATE to see the BAD guys win,…!!!..

From one of Mike’s lifelong friends:

Friends, it is with a heavy heart that I am inform you that Mike Walter died in the line of duty yesterday in Mississippi. Mike was an amazing Dad, husband, friend, athlete, jeopardy player and much more. I just spoke with his wife and he was serving a search warrant when he passed. As she said, knowing Mike he had to be the first one through the door and get inside the house. Doing so he was firs…t in the confrontation. Mike’s wife said he saved two other officers life by being the lead.

Mike and I played little league together for eight years, then at Rancho Bernardo and also at Palomar. He was tough, gritty, fun, funny and most of all loving to his family and friends.

Please keep his 11 year old daughter and wife in your thoughts and prayers.

Life can be short, so don’t let a day go by without hugging the ones you love.

    R.I.P. Buddy

    Your were the man Mike!

I grew up in Pearl and am now a sergeant with the Orange County, CA Sheriff’s Department. My condolences for the loss of your friend. From reading about him, it seems he was a very respected husband, father, friend and officer. The memory of this brave and honorable man will live forever. Stay strong…..
