He had activated his emergency equipment and was attempting to catch up to a speeding vehicle when a car made a left hand turn in front of him, causing a collision. Deputy Miller was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.
Deputy Miller had served with the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office for 24 years and had previously served with the Longwood Police Department for three years.

SANFORD, Fla.Family, friends and the Sheriff’s deputies in Seminole County are mourning deputy Matt Miller Tuesday as troopers investigate the crash that took his life.

"Matt was a consummate professional," Seminole County Sheriff Don Eslinger said.

Colleagues said Miller loved working traffic.

He was on his motorcycle, trying to pull over a speeding driver on Maitland Boulevard, when another car pulled out in front of him. Investigators said the deputy’s flashing lights were on.

The impact of the crash caused the red car to flip and the driver, identified as Abel Linfernal, was critically injured.

Eslinger said Miller’s wife is overcome by grief. That feeling is echoed by those in uniform.

"For us to have to investigate a crash where another law enforcement officer has been killed, it’s devastating," Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Kim Montes said.
