Undersheriff Pat Pyette was struck and killed by a vehicle while directing traffic around the scene of a disabled truck on U.S. Highway 2, between Harlem and Chinook.
An oncoming vehicle that was passing the scene struck Undersheriff Pyette, causing him to suffer fatal injuries. He was transported to a hospital in Great Falls where he succumbed to his injuries.
Undersheriff Pyette had served with the agency for 10 years and had previously served with the United States Air Force. He is survived by his wife and son.
Law enforcement across the Treasure State is mourning the loss of one of their own. A Blaine County law enforcement officer is dead after being hit by a car.
The accident happened Wednesday night on U.S. Highway 2 east of Chinook.
Undersheriff Pat Pyette was hit and killed while he was directing traffic around a disabled vehicle. Pyette was struck by a westbound car between Chinook and Harlem.
He was initially taken to Northern Montana Hospital in Havre, and then transported to Benefis in Great Falls where he later died.
A line of law enforcement vehicles left Great Falls Thursday afternoon leading the transport of Pyette’s body back to Blaine County. Pyette was 54-years-old.
No word yet if the driver of the car that hit Undersheriff Pyette will be facing any charges.
Pyette served in the Air Force for 20 years. He’d worked at the sheriff’s office since 2001, as the undersheriff since 2006.
The Montana Highway Patrol continues to investigate the accident.
