Sergeant David Enzbrenner was shot and killed while assisting a code enforcement officer serve a nuisance order at a home near the intersection of 12th Street and Division Street shortly after 4:00 pm.
A relative of the home’s residents suddenly approached and opened fire without warning, killing Sergeant Enzbrenner. The man then committed suicide.
Sergeant Enzbrenner had served with the Atchison Police Department for 24 years.

An Atchison Police Officer was killed during a late Friday afternoon shooting near 12th and Division streets.

Authorities confirmed that Officer David Enzbrenner, 46, died Friday evening from a gunshot wound.

It has also been confirmed that Skyler Barbee, 25, was the alleged shooter in the incident. Officials report that while Officer Enzbrenner was on duty serving a nuisance order at the home of Jerome Bratton, Mr. Barbee appeared out of nowhere and shot the officer in the head. The assailant then turned the weapon on himself and shot himself. He died at the scene.

"The officer didn’t have time to react," Atchison County Sheriff John Calhoon said of Officer Enzbrenner, a husband and father of three girls.

Atchison Police and authorities from Atchison County Sheriff’s Office, Atchison First Responders and Atchison Hospital EMS were dispatched to the scene shortly before 4 p.m. in wake of a call that two persons had sustained gunshot wounds

Atchison County Communications Center dispatches indicated the coroner, Dr. Erik Mitchell, of Wyandotte County-based Frontier Forensics was notified shortly after the incident.

Initial reports also indicated that traffic was blocked from the intersection of Kansas Highway 7 and Country Club Road as well as other routes.

Officer Enzbrenner had been employed by Atchison Police Department for 24 years.

Mr. Barbee had at least one prior arrest involving an assault on an officer.

On Aug. 2, he was picked up for vehicle burglary, battery on a law enforcement officer and obstruction of the legal process.

The shooting is still under investigation.

    Sergeant David Enzbrenner thank you for being a protector of your community, Father God watch over Sergeant Enzbrenner’s family and friends as they now grieve their loss. Father thank you for giving us people like Sergeant Enzbrenner who put their life on the line every day for our safety.
