Police Officer Robert Lasso was shot and killed while responding to a disturbance call at a home on New Street at about 5:15 pm. He was shot in the head when he encountered the subject.
Moments later the police chief arrested the homeowner. Officer Lasso was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wound.
Officer Lasso had served with the Freemansburg Borough Police Department for seven years.

Freemansburg police officer Robert Lasso was shot and killed on the job today in the borough, Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli announced tonight.
“Officer Lasso was a dedicated police officer and a family man, married and the father of two small children,” Morganelli said during a news conference.
Lasso, 31, was responding to a disturbance call in the 400 block of New Street in Freemansburg at about 5 this evening, Pennsylvania State Police said. He was confronted and shot upon arrival at the address, police said.
He later died at St. Luke’s Hospital in Fountain Hill from a gunshot wound. The death has been ruled a homicide and an autopsy is scheduled Friday, Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim said.

The sole suspect in the shooting is 46-year-old George Hitcho Jr., of 440 New St., in Freemansburg, Morganelli said. He is expected to be charged in Lasso’s death, the district attorney said.
A co-worker of Robert Lasso described him as everyone’s friend in Freemansburg.

Steven Lindstedt is a part-time Freemanburg police officer who has worked with Lasso for the last 10 years on the borough force.

Lindstedt said Lasso’s wife, Jennifer, teaches in the Bethlehem Area School District, and they have two children, Frankie and Rose.

He said Lasso has roots back three or four generations in Freemansburg and his father serves on the borough council. He couldn’t believe Lasso was gone.
