OAK RIDGE – An East Tennessee police captain injured in the line of duty died Monday night while hospitalized.

Ralph Braden, who’d been with the Wartburg Police Department for more than two decades, died at about 8 p.m. at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, Wartburg Police Department Patrolman Dwayne Bales said this morning.

Braden, 58, was injured April 22 while responding to a domestic dispute at Sunnyside Estate apartments in Wartburg.

Braden and suspect Eddie Dean Patterson, 29, grappled after Patterson tried to escape from a first-story window of his mother’s apartment, Bales said.

Braden suffered "serious life-threatening injuries," according to warrants charging Patterson with aggravated assault on a police officer.

Patterson fled on foot after the altercation and was arrested about 14 hours later, the warrants show.

He also was charged with domestic assault on Casey Newport, his girlfriend, Bales said.

Patterson also was charged with resisting arrest, evading arrest and with aggravated trespassing because he had previously been ordered by apartment managers to stay off the property, according to warrants.

Patterson remained incarcerated today at the Morgan County jail, Bales said.

Bales said this morning that Patterson will be charged in connection to Braden’s death.

Bales said Assistant District Attorney General Russell Johnson will determine what the aggravated assault charge will be upgraded to.

More details as they develop online and in Wednesday’s News Sentinel.
