ALEXANDRIAThe death Friday morning of an Alexandria police officer during a training exercise left the Alexandria community in shock and mourning.

James “Stumpy” Sticklen, 58, collapsed from a medical emergency early Friday morning while taking a training class in Corbin, Ky., on crisis intervention, said Lt. George Schreiner of the Alexandria Police Department.

The cause of death awaits an autopsy report, but it wasn’t as a result of the training, which takes place in a classroom, Schreiner said.

Sticklen joined the Alexandria Police Department in 1992 and became a beloved figure in area schools, where he worked as a school resource officer for the past nine years.

At 6-feet-8, Sticklen towered over many of the students he protected, but had a knack for connecting emotionally on their level, those who knew him said.
“He made a huge difference in the schools as an SRO, almost dropping the truancy rate to zero,” Schreiner said. “He did a lot of stuff after hours, gave talks and worked at the alternative school. He has a heart of gold. He, more than anybody, was suited to do that. It was him. I just know he did it really well. It is going to be a huge void to fill.”
Kerry Hill, executive director of pupil personnel for Campbell County Schools, said Sticklen worked primarily at Campbell County Middle School

“He had great character, and was great at building relationships with the kids,” Hill said. “If a kid needed something and he could provide it, he would do it. The kids loved him. He was an above-and-beyond kind of guy.”

Sticklen lived in Mason County and is survived by his wife and three children.
Sticklen had one or two more years before he’d have been eligible for retirement, Schreiner said.
“What he meant to us and the community, you can’t put a price tag on it,” Schreiner said. “It will be very difficult to fill those shoes.”
