UNIONTOWN — The Ohio State Highway Patrol says sun glare may have played a role in an early morning incident that claimed the life of a police officer.

The Summit County Medical Examiner says Uniontown police Capt. Daniel Stiles, 46, died from injuries he sustained in the accident early Tuesday morning.

The officer was directing traffic at a school near the intersection of Route 619 and Kauffman Avenue about 7:55 a.m. when he was hit.

The Hartville Fire Department responded and took the officer to Akron City Hospital where he died at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday.

Stiles has been a captain with the Uniontown Police Department for two years. Prior to that, Stiles was employed by the Hartville Police Department for seventeen years.

Stiles is a Marine and was reportedly being groomed for chief in Uniontown. He is originally from Hudson and currently lived in Greentown.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol has accident investigators on the scene. A parent of a student at the nearby school told investigators that she did not see Stiles in the road directing traffic when she struck him.

Stiles was wearing a bright orange safety vest. The speed limit is 45 mph in the area.

Stiles leaves behind a wife and three kids.
