Deputy John Norsworthy succumbed to injuries sustained in an automobile accident on December 27, 2010.
He was en route to backup another officer on a traffic stop when his patrol car left the roadway and struck a tree near the intersection of FM 762 and Benton Road. Deputy Norsworthy was trapped in his vehicle for almost an hour before rescue crews could free him. He was flown to a hospital in Houston where he remained until succumbing to his injuries.
Deputy Norsworthy had served with the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office for two years and had previously served with the Rosenberg Police Department.

HOUSTON—A Fort Bend County deputy who was critically injured in a December car crash has died.

Deputy John Norsworthy passed away Tuesday morning, sheriff’s office officials said.

Norsworthy was responding to a call for backup on Dec. 27 when he flipped his car and hit a tree on FM 762, near Benton Road.

Norsworthy was pinned beneath the wreckage and suffered head injuries and internal bleeding. He was airlifted to Memorial Hermann, where he remained until his death.

Investigators said a second car failed to yield to the deputy, causing the crash. The deputy had his emergency lights and siren on when the accident occurred.

Norsworthy was a deputy with the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office for two years. Prior to that, he worked for the Richmond Police Department.

He is survived by his wife and two children.

The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office has already hosted two blood drives in Norsworthy’s honor and established a benefit fund for his family.

Deputy Norsworthy started with the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office in November 2008. Prior to that he was a Patrol Officer for Rosenberg Police Department
