Arlington Police Officer Jillian Michelle Smith was fatally shot at the Arbrook Park Apartments in the 3800 block of Mahonia Way on Dec. 28 while responding to a domestic assault call.

Officer Smith, 24, was dispatched alone at about 7:30 p.m. to take a report at the apartment because the alleged suspect was not expected to be at the property.

The events that led to the shooting are unclear, but police confirm that three people, including Smith, were killed.

Jillian Smith was born in Arlington and first became interested in going into law enforcement in the sixth grade, while participating in the DARE program, Arlington police said.

Smith graduated from Seguin High School in 2005 and the University of Texas at Arlington in August 2009. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in criminology and also minored in sociology.

Smith is also a longtime member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Arlington.

She graduated in Arlington Police Academy Class No. 41 in February and completed her field training on Dec. 13.

Jillian Smith is the eighth Arlington police officer to die in the line of duty in the department’s history and the second in 2010.
