HOUSTON (KTRK) — It’s a tragedy for the University of Houston police force. For the first time in the history of the college police force, an officer has died in the line of duty.

Officer Ann O’Donnell, 24, was killed while responding to a call just before 1am. She lost control of her vehicle and hit a tree along North Macgregor Way, just south of the main UH campus.

Officer O’Donnell is described as a go-getter and was excited about her job. She had been with UH police for a year and it was her first job in the law enforcement field.

O’Donnell was injured in the accident while responding to a call regarding a kidnapping in progress. She lost control of the car and hit a tree.

O’Donnell was transported to Ben Taub Hospital, where she died.

"Very personable, very excited, starting her career and really looking forward to what she was doing and had a firm desire to serve the public in any way that she could," UH Police Chief Malcolm Davis said.

O’Donnell has family in Galveston, and they’ve already been taken to the hospital. Her parents, James and Nonette, also of Indian Beach were taken under police escort from their home to the hospital in Houston early this morning.

The Houston Police Department is handling the actual investigation into the car wreck. It says more information will become available after they look at a box inside her patrol unit that’s designed to track speed and other details.
