A former North Belle Vernon police officer died Monday after he was involved in an accident while providing an escort for a funeral service in central Texas.

Andrew J. Rameas, 33, of Killeen, Texas, was killed when the motorcycle he was riding on during the off-duty detail collided with a sport utility vehicle on Farm Road in southeastern Killeen.

According to the Associated Press, Killeen spokeswoman Carroll Smith said Rameas was bringing up the rear of the procession when the SUV turned in front of him.

He was pronounced dead at Scott & White Hospital in Temple.

Rameas worked as a part-time patrolman in North Belle Vernon from January 1999 to September 2007.

He is a cousin of the department’s chief, James Bedsworth.

"He was a great guy; easy to get along with and a good policeman," Bedsworth said this morning. "He was always happy. I never saw him cranky or angry. His lifelong dream was to be a cop. He loved being a cop and serving people."

Bedsworth said he and other Mid-Mon Valley police officers will attend the funeral Friday at First Baptist Church in Waynesburg.

"My department, we’re going to attend the funeral," he said. "A couple other departments plan on sending vehicles down."

An online obituary posted by Waynesburg-based Behm Funeral Homes states that Rameas formerly lived in Waynesburg.

He graduated from Waynesburg Central High School in 1996 and then from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Academy, the obituary states.

Rameas was a trained accident investigator and an Iraq war veteran who served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserve, 363rd Military Police Combat Support, according to the obituary.

He is the son of Peter D. and Janet Blair Rameas of Waynesburg.

Rameas worked for the Carmichaels Borough Police Department and the Harker Heights Police Department in Harker Heights, Texas.

A member of the Fraternal Order of Police, he was a former Deputy Sheriff with the Greene County Sheriff’s Department and served as a federal police officer at Fort Hood, Texas, and at the V.A. Hospital in Pittsburgh.
