Officer Merrill Bruguier was killed in a single vehicle crash at the intersection of S.D. Highway 63 and U.S. Highway 212 at approximately 4:00 am. He was traveling from Cherry Creek to Eagle Butte at the time of the crash.
Officer Bruguier was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Police Department for 14 years. He is survived by his 9-year-old son.

Family of tribal police officer killed says he was "people’s cop"

Family and friends say Indian Country is suffering a great loss.Officer Merrill Bruguier was killed early Saturday morning in a car crash near Eagle Butte.Sunday night his family spoke out about the kind of man he was in this exclusive interview. 37-year-old Bruguier worked as a tribal police officer for the Cheyenne Indian Reservation for 14 years.His family says he was on duty driving from Cherry Creek to Eagle Butte when he died in a single-car accident around 4 a.m. Saturday.

The family of this former Marine says he was a "people’s cop" and liked by everyone who knew him.

Virginia Rose Traversie Wool says, "He was the first one at work all the time. He was really dedicated to his job. He was the last one off work all the time. He’s going to be missed a lot because he served Indian people. And he was one hundred percent dedicated to his duty and his job."

Bruguier leaves behind a 9-year-old son.Funeral arrangements are still pending.
