ST. JOSEPH, MO. — A St. Joseph police officer, who grew up in Ottumwa, was accidentally shot and killed Wednesday afternoon by a fellow officer following a training exercise.

The St. Joseph Police Department reports that Officer Dan De Kraai was shot in the back around 2:15 p.m. while the other officer was demonstrating something to him.

The 35-year-old De Kraai was a five-year veteran with the department.

De Kraai’s brother, Eric, told KTVO Wednesday night that his brother, Dan, was a 1994 graduate of Ottumwa High School where he was a great football player.

He leaves behind his wife, Laura, and daughter, Lexie.

“He was an awesome person. He was a great husband and father! He will truly be missed,” said Eric De Kraai.

De Kraai’s grandparents, Dale and Dee De Kraai, and numerous other family members still live in Ottumwa.

St. Joe Police Chief Chris Connally said De Kraai and his fellow officer had just finished a special training exercise.

The drill did not involve live ammunition, but the officers had picked up their loaded service weapons afterward.

De Kraai was pronounced dead at a St. Joseph hospital.

The officer who fired the shot has been placed on administrative leave while an investigation is completed.
