CHANDLER – The Chandler Police Officer who lost his life during an undercover investigation in south Phoenix Wednesday night is being identified.

During a press conference Thursday, Chandler Police Chief Sherry Kiyler said that 34-year-old Officer Carlos Ledesma was killed during a staged drug deal. The suspected drug dealers also shot two other officers, but they will not be named in order to protect their investigation and their identities.

Of the wounded officers, one has been released and the other is in critical but stable condition.

Chief Kiyler said all three of the officers were married and have young children. Ledesma was a father of two, and had been on the force for 3 years.

"As we prepare to pay our respects to our fallen hero… we are truly grateful for the overwhelming support we have received," says Kiyler. "The events of last night are a grim reminder of the challenges that are faced by our law enforcement officers. As we mourn our loss and the loss of our community… we renew our pledge to safeguard the freedom and security of our citizens."

Phoenix Police is investigating what happened just before 7 p.m. Wednesday night, at 24th Ave and Baseline. The officers were reportedly posing as wholesale drug sellers, and were conducting an undercover marijuana sale to an area dealer.

The officers also had thousands of dollars in cash on their persons.

Police are still determining what caused the deal to go bad, but a gun battle was sparked. The suspects shot the three officers, and the officers returned fire, Sgt. Steve Martos says.

Five men are in custody and one is still hospitalized. An additional two suspects were shot and killed at the scene. The suspects arrested are: Thadika Singleton, 28, John Webber, 37, Doarnell Jackson, 35, Jerry Wayne Cockhearn, 25, and Eldridge Gittens, 34.

Thursday, community members expressed their sympathy by leaving flowers in front of the Chandler Police Department headquarters.

"Certainly a very dedicated officer, very focused, very much loved his job," says Sgt. Joe Favazzo. "Certainly a passion, as with many officers. Certainly a tremendous blow to our family here in Chandler."

Officer Ledesma’s photo is not being released at this time — because he worked undercover, releasing his photo could put other members of the force in danger. An account has been set up at Wells Fargo, in the name of the Officer Ledesma Family Memorial Fund.

The charges

Singleton is facing the following charges: 3 counts 1st Degree Murder, 4 counts Aggravated Assault, 1 count Transportation of Marijuana for Sale, 1 count Burglary.

Carlos was a good man. I am proud to say I worked with him while he was in Iowa.

    Rest in Peace Carlos.

My thoughts are with you and the boys Sherry.
