Chief Daniel Duncan suffered a fatal heart attack after responding to a call in the Lake Oswego Municipal Court Building.
Chief Duncan was in a meeting in the building when he heard officers dispatched to the location to apprehend a woman who was to be taken into custody and was a flight risk. Chief Duncan and the officers he was meeting with ran down three flights of stairs and across the building to the scene to assist with the apprehension.
After clearing the scene Chief Duncan stated he was feeling ill and was going home to take a nap. He went to bed later that night and passed away in his sleep.
Chief Duncan had served with the Lake Oswego Police Department for 25 years and had previously served with the Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office for nine years. He passed away six days before his retirement from the Lake Oswego Police Department.
He is survived by his wife and two children.

On May 20, 2010, Chief Dan Duncan died at home in his sleep of an apparent heart attack. Chief Duncan brought integrity to the Lake Oswego Police Department and the police profession. He was a friend and mentor to all of us at the police department, and he taught us how to build trust and confidence in the public we serve.

This loss is definitely felt by the police department, the community of Lake Oswego, and the law enforcement profession as a whole. Chief Duncan has left quite a legacy for this department and community, and we will honor his memory by continuing to provide the high level of quality service to our citizens that they have come to expect.


Daniel K Duncan was born January 28, 1955 in Hillsboro, Oregon just southwest of Portland, Oregon. He was the son of Wesley and Rita Duncan. Dan had an older sister, Peggy Lefebvre of Beaverton, Oregon and a younger brother Randy Duncan of Virginia. Dan married DeAnn Duncan and had two wonderful children Dana and Daniel.
Dan was a hard working man who found his way into Law Enforcement which he made a successful career. He started working as a corrections deputy with the Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office, then as a patrol deputy. He worked for Tillamook County for nine years, started a family and served the community with dedication and honor. In 1985 Dan became a patrol officer with the Lake Oswego Police Department. He moved his family back to the valley, settling in Oregon City where he would stay for the next 25 years.
Dan climbed through the ranks of the Lake Oswego Police Department, always working hard and leading with integrity. He developed long lasting relationships with those he worked with, forming a strong family like bond that lasted throughout his 25 years of service. He worked his way up to the position of Chief of Police, where he stayed for the last 7 years of his life. He was a strong leader who led by example, and usually had a big smile on his face. Dan loved being a cop, and appreciated each and every one of his co-workers.
Throughout his 55 years Dan lived life to the fullest. He loved his family, his friends, and enjoyed spending time doing the things he loved with those people. His six grandchildren looked up to and adored him, and they loved spending time with him. He was a mentor, a teacher, and rock of a man. He was a good fisherman, great hunter, and lived to be in the outdoors. Despite his life being too short, he has left having done it all. He will forever be missed, and there will never be another person like Dan.
