Inspector Brian Waynant was struck and killed by an Amtrak train while searching for an arson suspect. He was on the tracks near the Wilmington Amtrak Station at approximately 9:30 pm when the incident occurred.
Inspector Waynant had served with the Wilmington Fire Marshal’s Office for four years and had previously served with the Wilmington Police Department for 16 years. He is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.

Police ID Man Struck and Killed by Amtrak Train

WILMINGTON, Del.- Delaware State Police say a man struck and killed by an Amtrak train in Wilmington late Monday night has been identified as Brian P. Waynant, an inspector with the Wilmington Fire Marshal’s Office.

Police say Waynant, 45, was on the tracks when he was hit by a southbound train shortly before 10 p.m.

The accident occurred about a mile south of Wilmington in the area behind Meco Circle. The train came to a stop just south of the accident site.

According to police, Waynant was working at the time this incident occurred. No foul play is suspected at this time and authorities are awaiting a report from the State Medical Examiner’s Office pertaining to the cause and manner of death.

Waynant is survived by his wife, Cheri, and their two children, a son and a daughter. Waynant had served for 16 years as a Wilmington police officer before deciding in 2004 to leave the police department to join the Wilmington Fire Department. In January 2006 he was transferred to the Wilmington Fire Marshal’s Office.

The city of Wilmington is assisting Delaware State Police and Amtrak Police with the ongoing investigation of Monday night’s incident.
