Zolendziewski, 53, was a 23-year-veteran of the Holyoke police, appointed to the force as a reserve officer by Mayor Ernest Proulx on March 18, 1985, and named a full-time officer on April 28, 1986.

Scott said Zolendziewski had been out of work since the Dec. 28 accident. Following the accident, he was rushed to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield for emergency surgery, Scott said.

Zolendziewski spent weeks in the Baystate intensive care unit, and was transferred early this month to Healthsouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Western Massachusetts in Ludlow, Scott said.

He suffered complications relating to his injuries on Thursday and was rushed back to Baystate, where he succumbed to his injuries, Scott said.

“Officer Zolendziewski served the citizens of Holyoke proudly for over 23 years. he will be missed,” Scott said.

In 1986, Zolendziewski was injured on duty when struck in the head with a brick while trying to break up a disturbance on Dwight Street, Scott said. He had to undergo plastic surgery on his left ear at Holyoke Hospital.

In addition to working as a patrol officer, Zolendziewski spent many years as a DARE officer and the school resource officer for Holyoke High School.

In the 1990s, he was co-founder of the “Pizza with Police” program that invited young people at the H.B. Lawrence Elementary School to get to know police over slices of pizza. He also organized DARE camps during the summer that were used as a model for similar programs statewide.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
