SUN-TIMES MEDIA WIRE

(MOKENA) A state Dept. of Corrections parole officer was killed and three others were injured in a four-car crash Sunday afternoon near southwest suburban Mokena.

Ellane Aimiuwu, 57, of University Park was killed when a vehicle flipped over and struck the vehicle he was driving, according to Will County Coroner Patrick O’Neil. Aimiuwu was pronounced dead at 4:12 p.m. Sunday.

At 2:55 p.m., Illinois State Police responded to the four-vehicle crash on eastbound I-80 near milepost 143, according to Master Sgt. Bill Fuentes.

A 64-year-old man driving a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica was traveling west when, for unknown reasons, he veered left into the median wall, flipped over and struck two vehicles traveling east, landing on top of one, Fuentes said. A fourth vehicle traveling east then struck the SUV.

Aimiuwu was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Impala eastbound when the SUV landed on top of him, Fuentes said. The 64-year-old man was originally airlifted in serious condition to Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet.

A 23-year-old man driving a 2003 Honda Civic — the second of two vehicles immediately struck by the SUV — was treated and released at Silver Cross Hospital, Fuentes said.

The fourth vehicle — a 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe — was driven by a 51-year-old man who took himself to Palos Community Hospital in Palos Heights, Fuentes said.

Lanes were closed and traffic diverted for nearly four hours, Fuentes said.

Dept. of Corrections spokeswoman Januari Smith confirmed Aimiuwu had been employed as a senior parole agent since June 2001.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by state police.
